13. Death as a Bounty for the Believer

The death of the believer is also a bounty from Allah Almighty because, through it, the believer is freed from the hardships of this world and attains union with Allah Almighty. The death of the believer is a day of liberation from worldly struggles, while the death of the infidel is a day of captivity.

14. The First Murder and Burial Practices

It should be remembered that the very first murder was that of Habil at the hands of Qabil.

Allah Almighty taught him the burial procedure through a crow. After the death of Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him), the angels came to his children with heavenly camphor and gave him a bath and burial in their presence to teach them these procedures.

The Honour of Burial

It should be noted that burying the dead in a grave is a means of honor for the deceased because man's beginning is from dust, so his end should also be in the sand. Additionally, bad things are burnt, while the grave preserves the memory of the deceased.

A good thing is buried in the ground as a trust. Just as the roots of trees are in the ground and their branches above it, and the foundation of a house is in the ground while its structure is above it, similarly, the deceased believers are in the ground, and the living are above them.

In cremating the corpse, all these benefits are lost. Therefore, burying the deceased is considered among the divine bounties.

Please refer to Surah Abasa ayat 17 which provides the complete commentary from verse 17 through 32.

Ala-Maududi

(80:21) then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave,[14]

14. That is, not only in the matter of birth and destiny but also in the matter of death he is absolutely helpless before his Creator. Neither can he take birth by his choice nor die by his choice, nor can defer his death even by a moment. He dies precisely at the appointed time, in the appointed place, under the appointed circumstances that have been decreed for his death, and he is deposited in the type of grave destined for him whether it is the belly of the earth, the depths of the sea, a bonfire or the stomach of a beast. Nothing to say of the man. The whole world together cannot change the Creator’s decree in respect of any person.

(21) Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.[1861]

[1861]- To conceal his decaying body.
