Tafseer (Commentary) of the Verse

"Did He not find you (O Muhammad ﷺ) an orphan, so He gave you shelter [6]"

The Background of the Prophet's ﷺ Orphanhood

  1. When the Holy Prophet ﷺ was two months in his mother’s blessed womb, his father, Hazrat Abdullah, passed away in Madinah Shareef.
  2. Hazrat Abdullah left behind no wealth, home, or property for the Prophet ﷺ.
  3. The Prophet ﷺ was cared for by his grandfather, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib, and his mother, Bibi Amina.
    • At the age of four or six years, his mother passed away at a place called Abwa.
    • At the age of eight, his grandfather, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib, also passed away.

The Role of Hazrat Abu Talib in the Prophet's Upbringing

  1. Before his passing, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib entrusted the care of the Prophet ﷺ to his son, Hazrat Abu Talib, the beloved uncle of the Prophet ﷺ.
  2. Hazrat Abu Talib provided exemplary care and support for the Prophet ﷺ, raising him with immense love and protection.

Explanation of the Verse

  1. Divine Care Through Abdul Muttalib and Abu Talib

    • This verse emphasizes that it was Allah who placed deep love for the Prophet ﷺ in the hearts of Hazrat Abdul Muttalib and Hazrat Abu Talib.
    • Their care and protection were, in reality, manifestations of Allah’s divine plan and mercy.
  2. The symbolism of Divine Proximity and Care

    • Allah likens the Prophet ﷺ to a matchless and unique pearl.
    • Despite being an orphan, Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ a place of special proximity, protecting him amidst his enemies.
  3. Bestowal of Prophethood and Divine Closeness

    • Allah bestowed Prophethood upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ and elevated him to a station of unparalleled closeness.

Ala-Maududi

(93:6) Did He not find you an orphan and then gave you shelter?[6]

6. That is, there can be no question of forsaking you andbeing displeased with you. We have, in fact, been good toyou ever since the time you were born as an orphan. TheProphet’s (peace be upon him) father passed away threemonths before his birth; thus he was an orphan at birth. But Allah did not leave him without support even for a day.Up to six years of age his mother nourished and lookedafter him. After her death, his grandfather took him andbrought him up with great love. He would proudly tell thepeople: My this son has a great future. When he died, hisuncle, Abu Talib, became his guardian and treated himwith such rare love that no father could treat his son better. So much so that when after his proclamation to be aProphet the entire nation turned hostile, Abu Talib alonestood firm as his chief supporter for as long as ten years.

(6) Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge?
