Transliteration:( Wa laqad ahlaknaa ma hawlakum minal quraa wa sarrafnal Aayaati la'allahum yarji'oon )
And certainly We destroyed the cities [77] around you, and We brought varying signs so that they may return [78] to Us.
This refers to the destruction of earlier nations such as the people of Hijr, the people of Thamud, and others whose settlements lay along the routes of the Arabs.
Their ruined dwellings and desolate remains were visible reminders for the people of Makkah. They were meant to reflect and take heed from these visible signs of Divine punishment.
The "signs" mentioned here include the stories of destroyed nations, miracles of the Prophets, and even worldly hardships sent upon people as warnings.
These were all meant to soften their hearts and encourage them to return to faith.
But when all these gentle measures failed, Divine punishment became inevitable
