📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahzab – Verse 1

"O Prophet [1] (Communicator of the hidden news)! Continue fearing [2] Allah, and do not listen to the infidels and the hypocrites. Indeed Allah is All-Knowing, the Wise."

✅ [1] The Noble Address to the Prophet ﷺ

From this dignified form of address, three key lessons emerge:

  1. Addressing the Prophet ﷺ by title and not by name is the sunnah of Allah Almighty. Unlike other Prophets who were addressed by their names, our Beloved Prophet ﷺ was honored with exalted titles such as “O Prophet”, showing his supreme rank in the Divine court.

  2. The personal names of the Prophet ﷺ are Muhammad and Ahmad, but he has numerous illuminating titles. Among them, "Nabi" is an attributive name highlighting his divine connection.

  3. This distinct style of address signifies that the respect for the Holy Prophet ﷺ exceeds that of all other Prophets, emphasizing his unique and elevated position before Allah.

✅ [2] Command to Remain Firm in Piety

The Holy Prophet ﷺ already possessed the highest level of fear (taqwa) of Allah.
This command is not to newly acquire taqwa, but rather to remain steadfast upon it.

This shows that when someone is already upon a virtue, being commanded to uphold it further is a means of reinforcement and elevation, not correction.

Ibn-Kathir

1. O Prophet! Have Taqwa of Allah, and obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Verily, Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise. 2. And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. 3. And put your trust in Allah, and sufficient is Allah as a Trustee.

The Command to defy the Disbelievers and Hypocrites by followingthe Revelation of Allah and putting One’s Trust in Him

Here Allah points out something lower by referring to something higher. When He commands His servant and Messenger to do this, He is also commanding those who are lower than him, and the command is addressed to them more so. Talq bin Habib said: “Taqwa means obeying Allah in the light of the guidance of Allah and in hope of earning the reward of Allah, and refraining from disobeying Allah in the light of the guidance of Allah and fearing the punishment of Allah.”

(and obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites.) means, do not listen to what they say and do not consult them.

(Verily, Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise) means, He is more deserving of your following His commandments and obeying Him, for He knows the consequences of all things and is Wise in all that He says and does. Allah says:

(And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord.) meaning, of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

(Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.) means, nothing at all is hidden from Him, and put your trust in Allah, i.e., in all your affairs and situations.

(and sufficient is Allah as a Wakil.) means, sufficient is He as a Trustee for the one who puts his trust in Him and turns to Him.

(33:1) O Prophet,[1] fear Allah and do not obey the unbelievers and the hypocrites. Verily Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise.[2]

Ala-Maududi

(33:1) O Prophet,[1] fear Allah and do not obey the unbelievers and the hypocrites. Verily Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise.[2]

1. As we have mentioned in the introduction to the Surah, these verses were sent down at a time when Zaid had already divorced Zainab. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was himself feeling, and Allah had also inspired him with this, that it was the right time for striking at the root of the tradition and customs of ignorance regarding the adopted relations, and that he should take the initiative and marry the divorced wife of his adopted son (Zaid) so that the custom was completely eradicated. But the reason why he was hesitant in this regard was the fear that this would provide a strong excuse to the disbelievers and the hypocrites; who were already burning with jealousy at his successive victories, to start a propaganda campaign against him. This fear was not due to any apprehension for personal defamation, but for the reason that it would harm Islam; it would cause mistrust of Islam among the people who were inclined towards it; it would make the neutral people to join the enemy; and it would cause the weak minded people among the Muslims to be involved in doubts and suspicions. Therefore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) thought it was unwise to take a step for the eradication of a custom of ignorance, which would harm the greater interests and objectives of Islam.

2. In the very first sentence, in the beginning of the discourse, Allah removed all the apprehensions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), as if to say: “We know better what is useful and beneficial for our religion and what is not. We know what would be wise and what unwise in this regard. Therefore, you should not behave in a manner which would suit the disbelievers and the hypocrites, but you should behave in a manner which is according to Our Will. You should fear Us and not the disbelievers and the hypocrites.”

(1) O Prophet, fear Allāh and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
