📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahzab – Verse 2

"And follow what is revealed to you from your [3] Lord. Surely Allah is aware of your deeds."

✅ [3] All Forms of Revelation Are Divine

The command here is to follow every revelation received from the Lord:

  • Whether it is open revelation like the Holy Qur'an,

  • Or concealed/inspirational revelation, such as the Hadith.

This verse affirms that the Qur’an, Hadith, and every form of Divinely inspired guidance to the Prophet ﷺ are all from Allah Almighty.

✅ Reason for Revelation

This verse was revealed on the occasion when Abu Sufyaan, Ikramah, Abul Aiwar Aslami, and others came to Madina secretly and stayed at the house of the hypocrite Abdullah bin Ubayy.
They sought amnesty and entered into a dialogue with the Prophet ﷺ, proposing:

  • That he not mock their idols,

  • And acknowledge that these idols could intercede for their worshippers.
In return, they claimed they would not speak against Allah.

The hypocrites supported this suggestion. The Prophet ﷺ was greatly displeased, and Hazrat Umar (RA) intended to execute them. However, the Prophet ﷺ forbade him, saying they had come seeking protection.
Later, Hazrat Umar (RA) expelled them from Madina, and this verse was revealed—affirming the command to follow only Divine revelation and not heed the wishes of disbelievers or hypocrites.

Ibn-Kathir

Please refer to Surah Ahzab ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 3.

(33:2) Follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Verily Allah is fully aware of all that you do.[3]

Ala-Maududi

(33:2) Follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Verily Allah is fully aware of all that you do.[3]

3. This sentence is addressed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as well as to the Muslims and the opponents of Islam. It means: “If the Prophet (peace be upon him) earns defamation by acting according to the command of Allah, and bears patiently the attacks of the enemy on his honor, his devoted and sincere services will not remain hidden from Allah. The state of the Muslims who remain steadfast in their loyalty to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and of those who are involved in doubts and suspicions will be known to Allah. And Allah will also not remain unaware of the attempts of the disbelievers and the hypocrites who try to defame the Prophet (peace be upon him).”

(2) And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
