📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ahzab – Verse 31

"And whose of you remain obedient [77] to Allah and His Messenger, and do good deeds, We shall double [78] your reward, in comparison to (wives of) others, and We have kept prepared ready for you an honourable provision [79]."

✅ [77] Obedience of the Wives of the Prophet

This means the wives of the Prophet ﷺ must remain steadfast in obedience to Allah Almighty and His Messenger. The preposition here serves a narrative purpose; it does not imply that some wives were disobedient, rather all pure wives of the Prophet ﷺ were fully obedient. This obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is in reality obedience to Allah Himself.

✅ [78] Doubling of Reward

While ordinary believers may receive a certain measure of reward for good deeds, the pure wives of the Prophet ﷺ are promised to have their reward doubled. For example, if a believer receives the reward of fifty thousand for a good deed, the Prophet’s wives receive the reward of one hundred thousand. This is because part of the reward is for piety and obedience to Allah, and the other part is for gaining the pleasure of the Holy Prophet ﷺ—an honor unique to them.

From this, we understand the superiority of the Prophet’s pure wives even over his children in terms of reward.

✅ [79] Special Provision in Paradise

Besides the doubled reward, Allah has prepared a special, honorable provision in Paradise exclusively for the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. This signifies their elevated status and their unique companionship with the Prophet ﷺ in the Hereafter, a blessing that is not granted to others and remains beyond full human comprehension.

Please refer to Surah Ahzab ayat 30 which provides the complete commentary from verse 30 through 31.

(33:31) But whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger and does good deeds, Allah will double her reward.[45] We have prepared for her a generous provision.

Ala-Maududi

(33:31) But whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger and does good deeds, Allah will double her reward.[45] We have prepared for her a generous provision.

45. The reason for giving a double punishment for a sin and a double reward for a good work is that those whom Allah honors with a high rank in society generally become the leaders of men and the majority of the people follow them for good or for evil. Thus, their evil does not remain their own evil but becomes the cause of a people’s degeneration, and their goodness does not remain their own goodness but becomes the cause of the true success of many other people also. Therefore, when they commit evil they are punished for their own as well as for others degeneration, and when they do good they are not only rewarded for their own good works but also for this that they also guided others to do good.

This verse also gives the principle that the greater the degree of prohibition and trust in respect of somebody and something the greater and more serious will be the crime of violating that prohibition and trust and the greater will be the punishment for it. For example, drinking in the mosque is a much more serious crime than drinking privately in the house, and therefore, it will entail a severer punishment. Likewise, committing adultery with the prohibited relations is a far more serious crime than committing it with another woman, and therefore, will call for a severer punishment.

(31) And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allāh and His Messenger and does righteousness - We will give her her reward twice; and We have prepared for her a noble provision.
