Indeed, Do Not Obey Him But Prostrate and Draw Near to Me (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:19)

Meaning and Explanation:

In this verse, Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to ignore the defiance of Abu Jahl and continue performing acts of worship, particularly prostration (Sajdah), as a means to draw closer to Allah. The prostration here refers to the Sajdah of worship, where the Prophet ﷺ is directed to humble himself before Allah, regardless of the opposition he faces.

The verse emphasizes that the Prophet ﷺ should focus on his worship and devotion to Allah, as He is the true Protector and Helper. Additionally, prostration is also a symbol of gratitude and humility, acknowledging that Allah is the source of all support.

Key Lessons and Insights:

  1. Sajdah (Prostration) as an Act of Worship:

    • Sajdah is a central act of worship in Islam, symbolizing humility and submission. In this verse, the prostration is not just physical but a spiritual act, showing complete surrender and submission to Allah. The act of placing one's forehead on the ground is a powerful expression of acknowledging the greatness of Allah.
  2. Purpose of Obedience to the Prophet ﷺ:

    • The obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is not for the mere purpose of seeking forgiveness, but rather to draw closer to Allah. Through worship and humility, one seeks to establish a stronger connection with the Divine, gaining Allah’s favor and protection.
  3. Gratitude through Prostration:

    • Prostration is also an expression of gratitude. By prostrating, one acknowledges Allah’s blessings and expresses thanks for His guidance, protection, and mercy. This act of gratitude enhances spiritual closeness to Allah.

Ala-Maududi

(96:19) No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord).[16]

16. Sajdah (prostration) here implies the Prayer, so as to say: O Prophet, continue to perform your Prayer fearlessly as you have been in the past, and seek your Lord’s presence through it. In the Sahih of Muslim and other books of Hadith there is a tradition from Abu Huraira to the effect: The servant is nearest to his Lord when he is in the state of prostration, and in Muslim there is also a tradition from Abu Hurairah that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse, he performed a sajdah of recital.

(19) No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
