Who Has Created Man from a Blood Clot (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:2)

Verse Breakdown

"Who Has Created Man" [3]

  • Refers to all of humanity, or specifically, to the Holy Prophet ﷺ as the pinnacle of creation.
  • The Prophet ﷺ is the most exalted among creation, and the act of his creation is a matter of divine pride.

"From the Blood Clot" [4]

  • Describes the stages of human creation:
    • From sand, nourishment is produced.
    • From nourishment, blood is formed.
    • From blood, sperm is created, leading to a clot of flesh.
    • This clot is then developed into the intricate structure of the human body.

Reflection on Creation

  • This verse showcases Allah Almighty’s divine power and creative process, emphasizing that there is no inconsistency in His creation.
  • Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) are exceptions to the typical process of creation, reflecting Allah's unique ability to create without precedent.

Spiritual Implications of the Verse

Parallel Between Physical and Spiritual Creation

  • Just as Allah transforms an impure blood clot into a noble human being, He can purify and elevate morally degenerate individuals.
  • Through the Holy Prophet ﷺ, Allah promised to transform the morally corrupt people of Makkah into individuals of high spiritual and moral standing.
  • These transformed people would become fountains of Islamic law (Shariah) and mystical knowledge (Tareeqat).

Ala-Maududi

(96:2) created man from a clot of congealed blood.[4]

4. After making mention generally of the creation of the universe, mention has been made of man in particular, saying how Allah made him a perfect man starting his creation from an insignificant and humble state. Alaq is plural of alaqah, which means congealed blood. This is the primary state of the embryo which appears a few days after conception. Then it assumes the form of a lump of flesh, then afterwards it gradually takes human shape. For details, see (Surah Al-Hajj, Ayat 5) (specifically notes 5-7).

(2) Created man from a clinging substance.
