As He Considers Himself Independent (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:7)

The Nature of Independence from Allah and His Guidance [10]

  1. Interpretation of Self-Independence:

    • The verse refers to those who view themselves as independent of Allah Almighty, the Prophets, Saints, and Islamic scholars. This sense of independence leads to rebellion, as such individuals reject the need for guidance and divine support.
    • Conversely, those who view themselves as obedient devotees to these spiritual guides will never exceed their limits and will never become rebellious. The root cause of infidelity and transgression is the rejection of guidance from these pious figures. When one becomes independent from the Prophets and Saints, they essentially detach themselves from Allah Almighty as well.
  2. Human Helplessness and Dependence:

    • Unlike animals, which only have basic needs like food, humans are dependent on multiple necessities—food, shelter, clothing, and more. Furthermore, the diseases of humans are numerous and their treatments more complex compared to animals.
    • This dependence on various aspects of life should remind humans not to regard themselves as independent but to recognize their utter dependence on Allah and His guidance.

Key Lessons and Insights from the Verse:

  1. Dependence on the Prophet (ﷺ) and Allah:

    • Just as the earth is never independent of the sky—always in need of rain, sunshine, and other elements—similarly, we cannot become independent of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). We are dependent on his intercession, especially on the Day of Judgement, and on his teachings for guidance. Thus, true independence from the Prophet is harmful.
  2. Independence in Worldly Affairs vs. Divine Dependence:

    • Being independent from others in worldly matters (such as relying on oneself for material needs) is often seen as a virtue. However, remaining dependent on Allah and His Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) is a source of pride and nobility. We must recognize that spiritual independence is detrimental and leads to rebellion.
  3. Reflection and Its Spiritual Significance:

    • Self-reflection should be done with care. Reflecting on one’s sins and the mercy of Allah is an act of worship, while contemplating divine attributes in oneself is a path to mystical experience.
    • However, becoming independent of Allah after reflecting on one’s shortcomings is a form of transgression and can lead to infidelity. Hence, self-reflection should lead us closer to Allah, not farther away.
  4. Knowledge over Wealth:

    • Knowledge is far superior to wealth. In this verse, Allah reminds us that the pursuit of knowledge and spiritual wisdom is far more important than material possessions. True wealth lies in divine knowledge and guidance, not worldly goods.

Ala-Maududi

(96:7) for he believes himself to be self-sufficient.[8]

8. That is, when the man has attained wealth, honor and rank and whatever else he desired to attain in the world, he becomes rebellious instead of being grateful and transgresses the boundaries of servitude to Allah.

(7) Because he sees himself self-sufficient.
