“And what has happened to you that you do not eat of that on which the name of Allah has been pronounced [259]? He has explained to you in detail [260] what is forbidden to you, except that you are compelled to do so. And indeed, many lead others astray with their desires without knowledge [261]. Surely, your Lord knows well the transgressors [262].”
Any animal slaughtered with Allah’s name is lawful, even if it belongs to customs like Baheerah or Saaibah. Cows or animals set aside for idols are unlawful, but if slaughtered in Allah’s name, like on Giyarwih Shareef, they are lawful and sacred.
Islamic law clarifies unlawful items clearly, and whatever is not expressly forbidden is considered lawful. Allah has stated: “I find not in what has been revealed to me any meal is forbidden” [6:145].
If survival is at risk, then consuming otherwise forbidden meat becomes permissible, but only as much as needed. This highlights the mercy and flexibility in Islamic law.
Some people give misguided rulings, like calling idol-meat lawful and animals sacrificed in Allah’s name unlawful. Such distortions are condemned. This verse warns misguided scholars who, without knowledge, mislead others based on opinions or desires.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 119 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 118 which provides the complete commentary from verse 118 through 119.
(6:119) And how is it that you do not eat of that over which Allah’s name has been pronounced even though He has clearly spelled out to you what He has forbidden you unless you are constrained to it?[85] Many indeed say misleading things without knowledge, driven merely by their lowly desires. But your Lord knows well the transgressors.
85. See (Surah An-Nahl, Ayat 15). We may observe in passing that this allusion indirectly establishes that Surah al-Nahl was revealed before the present surah.
[340]- In cases of dire necessity, what is normally prohibited becomes permissible, but only to the extent of the need.
