وَلَوۡ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ مَلَكٗا لَّجَعَلۡنَٰهُ رَجُلٗا وَلَلَبَسۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم مَّا يَلۡبِسُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa law ja'alnaahu malakal laja'alnaahu rajulanw wa lalabasnaa 'alaihim maa yalbisoon )

9. And if We had appointed an angel (as Messenger), We would surely have made him a man [18], and they would have had the same doubt about him as they have now [19]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(9) And if We had made him [i.e., the messenger] an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves [i.e., confusion and doubt]. (Saheen International Translation)

Surah Al-Anam Ayat 9 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

18. So that people could listen to his speech and derive benefit from it, which is the object of the coming of the Prophet. From this, we learn that a woman cannot be a prophet. Says Allah Almighty: "And we sent not before any but men to whom we reveal." (S16:V43)
19. By this is meant that even if the angels had come in human form these infidels would have had the same doubt men to whom we reveal." (S16:V43)

1. By this, it meant that even if the angels had come in human form these infidels would have had the same doubt.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 9 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 7 which provides the complete commentary from verse 7 through 11.

(6:9) Had We appointed an angel, We would have sent him down in the form of a man – and thus We would have caused them the same doubt which they now entertain.[7]

Ala-Maududi

(6:9) Had We appointed an angel, We would have sent him down in the form of a man – and thus We would have caused them the same doubt which they now entertain.[7]

7. This is the second point in response to the unbelievers’ objection. One possible form in which the angel could have appeared is in its true, non-terrestrial form. It has already been pointed out that the time for this has not arrived. Alternatively, angels could have come down in human form. But this would have left the unbelievers facing the same difficulty as they faced with regard to whether the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) had been designated by God or not.

(9) And if We had made him [i.e., the messenger] an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves [i.e., confusion and doubt].
