📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Anfal – Verse 49

"When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease [115] used to say, 'These Muslims are proud of their religion [116].' And whoever relies upon Allah, then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might, Wise [117]."

✅ 115 Doubt and Weakness of the Hypocrites

When the hypocrites and newly converted individuals with weak faith saw the military strength of the disbelievers at Badr, they were overwhelmed with fear. Their inner disease of hypocrisy and doubt surfaced, leading some even to apostasy.
This highlights that trials expose the truth of one’s heart, distinguishing between firm believers and pretenders.

✅ 116 Mockery of Muslim Faith and Courage

These hypocrites mockingly remarked that Muslims were too confident and proud of their religion. They questioned how such a small, ill-equipped force dared to challenge a powerful army.
Their words reflect the ignorance of divine help and overreliance on worldly measures instead of faith.

✅ 117 Reliance on Allah is the Mark of True Faith

This is Allah’s response to their mockery. Whoever places full trust in Allah will find Him sufficient, for Allah is All-Powerful and All-Wise.
Victory does not depend on numbers or weapons, but on Tawakkul (reliance) and divine support. This verse affirms that true strength lies in sincere faith.

Please refer to Surah Anfal ayat 47 which provides the complete commentary from verse 47 through 49.

(8:49) And recall when the hypocrites and those whose hearts were diseased said: ‘Their faith has deluded these (believers).[39] But he who puts his trust in Allah shall find Allah All-Mighty. All-Wise.’

Ala-Maududi

(8:49) And recall when the hypocrites and those whose hearts were diseased said: ‘Their faith has deluded these (believers).[39] But he who puts his trust in Allah shall find Allah All-Mighty. All-Wise.’

39. Observing that a small band of resourceless Muslims was getting ready to confront the powerful Quraysh, the hypocrites as well as those who were heedless of God and cared only for worldly interests, often tended to say to one another that the religious passion of the Muslims had driven them to utter fanaticism and zealotry. They were sure that the Muslims would face a total rout on the battlefield. They were puzzled by how the Prophet (peace be on him), in whom the Muslims believed, had cast such a spell over them that they were altogether incapable of rational calculation and were hence rushing straight into the very mouth of death.

(49) [Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease [i.e., arrogance and disbelief] said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
