Transliteration:( Fakazzaboohu fa akhazat humur rajfatu fa asbahoo fee daarihim jaasimeen )
"Then they belied him [89], and the earthquake overtook them; they remained in their homes prostrate [90]."
This verse shows that divine punishment never descends merely due to sins alone, but rather, it comes after the clear denial of a Prophet. Allah Almighty has declared elsewhere: “We do not punish until We have sent a Messenger.” Hence, the people of Hazrat Shuʿayb (عليه السلام) were not destroyed because of their disobedience to Allah in general, but because they denied the message brought by their Prophet after receiving ample warning and opportunity for repentance.
The punishment they received is described here as a devastating earthquake, which left them lifeless and flattened in their homes, lying prostrate in death. In another verse, their punishment is referred to as a roaring cry, which some may think is different, but the scholars have explained that first Hazrat Jibraeel (عليه السلام) let out the scream, which caused a sudden tremor like an earthquake, shaking their hearts with fear and collapsing their homes. Thus, the two descriptions—roaring cry and earthquake—refer to one and the same punishment and are perfectly consistent.
This verse reinforces the principle that rejection of Prophets leads to divine wrath, and that their miracles and warnings are not to be taken lightly.
