📖 Commentary on Surah Al-A‘raaf – Verse 134

And when the punishment descended upon them, they said: "O Musa, pray to your Lord on our behalf, by that covenant He has with you (281). Surely, if you remove this torment from us (282), we will certainly believe in you and will send with you the Children of Israel (283)."

✅ Recognition of Prophetic Intercession in Times of Crisis (281)

In their moments of intense suffering, even Pharaoh and his people turned to Musa (peace be upon him) for prayer, appealing to the covenant Allah had with him. This shows that deep within, Pharaoh acknowledged the truth of Musa’s Prophethood, even if he didn’t openly submit. It also reveals a natural human tendency to seek the prayers of the pious during hardship. Those who oppose such intercession go against a deeply ingrained human and spiritual instinct, as even a hardened disbeliever like Pharaoh recognized its value.

✅ Divine Actions Can Be Attributed to Prophets (282)

The people pleaded with Musa to remove the torment, though such relief comes only from Allah. Yet, Allah did not object to this language, showing that divine actions may be attributed to Prophets as a means, without implying polytheism. It is the accepted practice of attributing miracles and help through the Prophet, under Allah’s command and will.

✅ Even Pharaoh Acknowledged Prophetic Mediation (283)

Pharaoh promised that if the punishment was lifted, they would believe and release the Children of Israel. This again reflects that he recognized the authority of Musa (peace be upon him) as a true mediator between creation and the Creator. Denying the concept of prophetic mediation is shown here to be more extreme than even Pharaoh’s stance, for he at least admitted its truth in times of desperation.
