📖 Commentary on Surah Al-A‘raaf – Verse 185

Why do they not look into the kingdom of the heavens and the earth [419] and whatever things Allah has made [420], that perhaps their term may have drawn near [421]. Then in what discourse will they believe thereafter [422]?

✅ Reflecting on the Dominion of Creation [419]

Here, the word "sight" may refer either to seeing with the eyes or pondering with inner insight. The term "dominion" denotes that absolute ownership and power over creation belongs solely to Allah Almighty. Worldly kings may be called rulers, but they are not true owners of dominion. From this, we learn that studying science and astronomy, when done with the intention of discovering Allah’s greatness, is rewardable. Just as Salaah and fasting are essential, so too is contemplating creation, which leads to mystical recognition of Allah. This form of reflection is emphasized repeatedly in the Qur’an.

✅ Comprehensive Knowledge of Creation [420]

Beyond the heavens and the earth, Allah’s knowledge and signs are found in every element of creation—the moon, stars, mountains, trees, vegetation, and human beings. His power encompasses all things, encouraging believers to recognize His signs through everything around them.

✅ A Reminder of Life’s Limited Span [421]

This teaches us that a person should treat every moment as if it were his last. He should never postpone righteous deeds, for delay may result in eternal loss. To rely solely on false hopes of a long life without action is a mark of heedlessness, characteristic of the disbelievers.

✅ Finality of Revelation and Prophethood [422]

This affirms that the Holy Qur’an is the Final Revelation and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the Final Messenger. If someone does not accept faith through this Qur’an and the Seal of Prophets, then no other source will bring them guidance. To be deprived of belief through this final message is to be barred from Allah’s Mercy.

Ibn-Kathir

185. Do they not look in the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all things that Allah has created; and that it may be that the end of their lives is near. In what message after this will they then believe) Allah asks, those who denied faith, did they not contemplate about Our Ayat in the kingdom of the heavens and earth and what was created in them Do they not contemplate about all this and learn lessons from it, so that they are certain that He Who has all this, has no equal or rival All this was made by He Who Alone deserves the worship and sincere religion, so that they might have faith in Him and believe in His Messenger, all the while turning to Allah’s obedience, rejecting any rivals to Him, and rejecting idols. They should be warned that their lifes may have reached their end, and they, thus, face their demise while disbelievers, ending up in Allah’s torment and severe punishment. Allah said,

﴿فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍ بَعْدَهُ يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴾

(In what message after this will they then believe) Allah says, what more warnings, and discouragements should compel them to believe, if the warnings and threats that Muhammad brought them from Allah in His Book do not compel them to do so Allah said next,

(7:185) Have they not observed the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and all that Allah has created[143] and that their term of life might have drawn near[144] After this warning from the Prophet, what will it be that will make them believe?

Ala-Maududi

(7:185) Have they not observed the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and all that Allah has created[143] and that their term of life might have drawn near[144] After this warning from the Prophet, what will it be that will make them believe?

143. The word ‘companion’ here refers to the Prophet (peace be on him) who was born, brought up, grew into youth, in short, spent his whole life including his old age in their midst. Before the advent of his prophethood, Muhammad (peace be on him) was known to all the Quraysh as good natured and of sound mind. However, as he started calling people to accept the Message of God, they immediately dubbed him insane. Now it is obvious that they were not attributing insanity to him as regards his pre-prophetic life, for they had nothing evil to say about that period of his life. The charge of insanity, therefore, was levelled against the Message he began to preach when he was designated a Prophet.

The Qur’an, therefore, asks them to give serious thought to the teachings of the Prophet (peace be on him) and to see if there is anything that is inconsistent with sanity, or is meaningless and irrational. Had people reflected on the order of the universe, or carefully considered even one single creation of God, they would have been convinced of the truth of the teachings of the Prophet (peace be on him). They would have realized that whatever he said to refute polytheism, or to establish God’s unity or the accountability of man in the Hereafter, or about the necessity of man’s surrender to God, was corroborated by the entire order of the universe and every single atom of God’s creation.

144. The unbelievers, feeble-minded as they are, fail to understand that no one knows when he will die. For death overtakes man totally unawares. This being the case, what will be the end of those who waste the time at their disposal until death overtakes them and fail to find the direction to their salvation?

(185) Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allāh has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement [i.e., message] hereafter will they believe?
