📖 Commentary on Surah Al-A‘raaf – Verse 186

Whomsoever Allah leads astray [423], none is to guide him. And He leaves them to wander in their contumacy [424].

✅ The Finality of Misguidance by Divine Will [423]

This refers to the person whose misguidance is known to Allah due to his persistent evil deeds. As a result, Allah seals his heart, making him unable to receive guidance. However, not all misguidance is final—if a person's deviation is temporary, he may return to the path through the company of the righteous. Just like coal cannot become white, but surface-level blackness can be washed away, so too can temporary sin be cleansed through repentance and good influence.

✅ Divine Abandonment Is a Form of Punishment [424]

When Allah forsakes a person, it is a form of Divine punishment—He allows them to continue in disbelief and sin unchecked. This contrasts with someone whom Allah checks even for small errors, which is actually a sign of Divine Mercy. For instance, Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) was corrected for an unintentional mistake, showing Allah’s special favor and attention toward His chosen ones.

Ibn-Kathir

186. Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him; and He lets them wander blindly in their transgressions.) Allah says, those who were destined to be misguided, then none can lead them to guidance, and even if they try their best effort to gain such guidance, this will not avail them,

﴿وَمَن يُرِدِ اللَّهُ فِتْنَتَهُ فَلَن تَمْلِكَ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئاً﴾

(And whomsoever Allah wants to put in Fitnah (error, because of his rejecting of Faith, or trial), you can do nothing for him against Allah) ﴿5:41﴾, and,

(Say: “Behold all that is in the heavens and the earth,” but neither Ayat nor warners benefit those who believe not) ﴿10:101﴾.

(7:186) For those whom Allah lets go astray, there is no guide; and He will leave them in their transgression to stumble blindly.

Ala-Maududi

(7:186) For those whom Allah lets go astray, there is no guide; and He will leave them in their transgression to stumble blindly.
