📖 Commentary of Surah Al-A‘raaf – Verse 91

"Then the earthquake overtook them. So, in the morning they fell prostrate in their homes." [221]

✅ Multiple Punishments for a Defiant Nation [221]

This verse signifies the severe punishment that befell the disbelievers of Madyan. The phrase “fell prostrate” indicates their lifeless collapse—not in worship, but in destruction. Their end was not just due to an earthquake, but a series of divine punishments. First came a deafening scream, followed by a devastating earthquake, as also mentioned in Surah Hud.

According to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه), a blast of hellish heat overwhelmed them—so intense that they ran from their homes to escape it, hiding in dungeons and fleeing to forests. There, a deceptive cloud appeared which turned into a blazing fire, consuming them all. The term “homes” in this verse metaphorically refers to their entire village, as their destruction occurred even after fleeing from their physical houses.

This multi-layered punishment was not coincidental—it was a direct result of their persistent defiance and rebellion against divine commandments.
