15. The Concept of Orphanhood and Charity

The term "orphan" carries a profound meaning both in the literal and metaphorical sense, drawing attention to vulnerability, care, and the potential for growth through nurturing.

Key Points:

  1. Definition of an Orphan:

    • Among humans, an orphan is a child whose father has passed away, leaving them without a primary provider and protector.
    • Among animals, an orphan is a young one whose mother has died, as she is typically the source of nourishment and care.
    • A pearl is referred to as an "orphan" when it is solitary within the oyster, symbolizing something precious yet alone.
  2. Symbolism of Growth and Nurturing:

    • Good fruit from a good seed: To yield beneficial results, the seed must be pure, planted in fertile soil, and cared for in a timely manner. This reflects the importance of proper guidance, effort, and nourishment in both physical and spiritual contexts.
    • Lawful sustenance: Only that which comes from pure and lawful means can yield blessings and spiritual benefits.
  3. Seasonality and Effort:

    • Just as cultivation relies on the right season and fertile ground, acts of charity and kindness thrive when performed with sincerity and care, especially in times of need or hardship.
  4. Charity and Relationships:

    • Supporting orphans and the needy is an act of great virtue with abundant rewards.
    • Charity is not limited to strangers but extends to family ties, including kinship through blood relations or marital bonds (in-laws), reinforcing the importance of maintaining strong relationships.
