7. Reflection on Intentions and Deeds

This verse addresses the infidels’ misconception that Allah Almighty is not aware of their deeds, intentions, and desires. It serves as a reminder that Allah is aware of everything — not just our actions but also the intentions behind them.

Key Points:

  1. Accountability Before Allah:

    • The verse asks whether the infidel thinks that Allah does not observe their deeds, intentions, and desires. This implies that nothing escapes Allah's attention. People may try to conceal their actions or intentions, but in reality, Allah knows everything — including their inner thoughts.
  2. Wealth and Intention:

    • When spending wealth, one should always consider both the expenditure and the intention behind it. The wealth should not be spent aimlessly or for selfish, harmful purposes. Spending with good intentions and for good causes is essential.
  3. The Analogy of Seed and Water:

    • The verse compares good spending with fertile soil and good intentions with water for the seed. Just as a seed needs fertile soil and water to grow, charitable spending requires both good intentions and the right purpose. Both elements are necessary for the desired outcome.
      • Fertile soil represents good causes, while water represents pure, sincere intentions.

Without both, the "seed" (i.e., the act of charity) will not grow into something fruitful and beneficial.

Lessons to Learn:

  • Intention is Key: When giving charity or spending wealth, one must ensure their intentions are pure and aimed at pleasing Allah. Good intentions act as the driving force behind the act of charity, making it meaningful and valuable in Allah's eyes.

  • Proper Spending: Wealth should be spent wisely and on worthy causes. Like planting seeds in fertile ground, charity must be directed toward good causes for it to grow and yield rewards.

  • Nothing is Hidden from Allah: The verse underscores that Allah sees not only what we do, but also why we do it. Our actions are judged by the intentions behind them, and this is a reminder to always act with sincerity.

Ala-Maududi

(90:7) Does he believe that none has seen him?[8]

8. That is, doesn’t this boaster understand that there is also a God above him, Who sees by what means he obtained this wealth, in what ways he spent it, and with what intention, motive, and purpose he did all this? Does he think that God will put any value on his extravagance, his fame-mongering and his boasting. Does he think that like the world, God too will be deluded by it.

(7) Does he think that no one has seen him?
