3. By the Witnessing and the Witnessed

📖 Tafseer (Commentary) of Ayah 85:3

🔹 This verse has multiple interpretations, with around thirteen explanations given by scholars:
If derived from ‘witnessed’ – Then Shaheed (witness) refers to something present, and Mashhood (witnessed) refers to something worthy of being presented. Examples:

  • Friday is Shaheed, as it presents itself to believers.
  • Day of Arafah is Mashhood, as all pilgrims present themselves on 9th Zil-Hajj.
If derived from ‘testimony’ – Then Shaheed refers to one who testifies, and Mashhood is that about which testimony is given. Examples:
  • The Holy Prophet ﷺ is Shaheed, and other Prophets and their followers are Mashhood.
  • Our limbs will bear witness (Shaheed), and we will be Mashhood.
  • The Ka'bah, the Black Stone, Ramadan, and the Qur'an will be witnesses for or against people on the Day of Judgment.
If derived from ‘observation’ – Then Shaheed refers to the observer, and Mashhood is the observed.
  • The Holy Prophet ﷺ is Shaheed, as he witnessed the divine Splendour of Allah Almighty on Shab-e-Me'raj.

Ala-Maududi

(85:3) and by the witness and what is witnessed:[3]

3. The commentators have expressed many different views about “the witness” and “that which is witnessed”. In our opinion what fits in well with the context is that it is every such person who will witness the Day of Resurrection, and that which is witnessed is the Resurrection itself, the dreadful scenes of which will be seen by all. This is the view of Mujahid. Ikrimah, Dahhak, lbn Nujaih and some other commentators.
