Quran-89:24 Surah Al-fajr English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَيَاتِي

Transliteration:( Yaqoolu yaa laitanee qaddamtu lihayaatee )

24.He will say: "Alas! Had I sent forward some virtues in my life [26]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(24) He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."[1922] (Saheen International Translation)

26. Here, life denotes the worldly life or the life of the Hereafter. In terms of the first life the meaning of the verse would be: I wish during my worldly life I had done some good deeds and sent them for the Hereafter.

 In the second instance it would mean: I wish I had sent some good deeds for this permanent life. I had wasted my time in accumulating wealth for the temporary life. It should be remembered  that even this expression of regret for the infidels would be a means of punishment. 

The expression of remorse for not doing good deeds in the world by the believer is a means of obtaining elevation of status for him. The expression of remorse is an act of repentance for the sinful believer while the expression of regret by the infidel on the Day of Judgement is a mere punishment for him.

Ala-Maududi

(89:24) He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!”
