📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hijr – Verse 79

Then We took revenge on them [91]; and no doubt, both these towns lie on a clear road [92]
(Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [91] Divine Revenge for the Unjust

Allah Almighty took vengeance on the people of Prophet Shu'ayb (عليه السلام) for their injustices.

  • This revenge refers to the punishment by fire that destroyed the unjust people, affirming that Divine justice ultimately prevails.

  • Their rejection of the truth and oppression brought upon them the wrath of Allah, just as it had come upon other past nations.

✅ [92] Lessons from the Clear Road

The verse mentions that both these towns—those of Lut (عليه السلام) and Shu'ayb (عليه السلام)lie along a well-traveled road.

  • The word "Imam", meaning leader, is used here to signify a commonly followed path, since roads guide and lead travelers.

  • This implies that the people of Makkah, who frequently passed by the ruins of these destroyed towns during their journeys, should have taken heed and learned from the fate of earlier nations.

  • The Divine Tablet, the Book of Deeds, and the clear road are all symbolic of guidance and record, reminding mankind of the consequences of denial and corruption.

(15:79) So We chastised them. The desolate locations of both communities lie on a well-known highway.[44]

Ala-Maududi

(15:79) So We chastised them. The desolate locations of both communities lie on a well-known highway.[44]

44. Midian lay on the route from Hijaz to Palestine and Syria.

(79) So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
