Transliteration:( Innal lazeena yaghud doona aswaatahum 'inda Rasoolil laahi ulaaa'ikal lazeenam tah anal laahu quloobahum littaqwaa; lahum maghfiratunw wa'ajrun 'azeem )
"Indeed, those who lower [5] their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety. For them is forgiveness and a great reward."
This verse was revealed about Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
After the revelation of the previous verse, both of them intentionally softened their voices in the presence of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, showing utmost humility and respect.
Their action became a model of sincere etiquette (adab) before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
This verse teaches that:
While external acts of worship reflect the piety of the body, respect for the Prophet ﷺ is a sign of inner piety.
Allah says in another verse: "And whoever respects the signs of Allah, then indeed it is from the piety of the hearts." (Surah Al-Ḥajj, 22:32)
Thus, this verse establishes that the hearts of the Companions were tested and found righteous, and so:
Those who accuse the Companions of wrongdoing are in denial of this divine testimony.
May Allah grant us the piety of heart that reflects in love, respect, and humility before the beloved Messenger ﷺ.
The tafsir of Surah Hujurat verse 3 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hujurat ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 3.
(49:3) The ones who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah are those whose hearts Allah has tested for God-fearing.[5] Theirs shall be forgiveness and a great reward.
5. That is, only those people give due reverence to the Messenger (peace be upon him) of Allah, who have passed successfully through the tests and trials set by Allah and proved by their steadfastness that their hearts indeed possess taqwa (piety). From this, it follows automatically that the heart which is devoid of reverence for the Prophet (peace be upon him) is, in fact, devoid of taqwa, and a person’s raising his voice louder than the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) is not only an uncivilized act outwardly but also a sign of the absence of taqwa in his heart.
