وَلَقَدۡ كُنتُمۡ تَمَنَّوۡنَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن تَلۡقَوۡهُ فَقَدۡ رَأَيۡتُمُوهُ وَأَنتُمۡ تَنظُرُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa laqad kuntum tamannnawnal mawta min qabli an talqawhu faqad ra aitumoohu wa antum tanzuroon )

143. And certainly, you longed for death before you met it [303]. Now you have seen it with your own eyes. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(143) And you had certainly wished for death [i.e., martyrdom] before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on. (Saheen International Translation)

303. By this is meant those Companions who could not participate in the Battle of Badr were full of regret and desirous of participating in future battles. But in the Battle of Uhud their feet were uprooted i.e. they took to flight. This verse gives a hint that one should not wish for death as it appears in the Hadith.

102. This is with reference to those Companions who had urged the Prophet to go out of Madina and take on the enemy there because of their ardent desire for martyrdom. (See Ibn Sa’d, Tabaqat, vol. 2, p. 38 – Ed.)
