"And he shall be a Messenger to the children of Israel [103] saying: I have come to you with a sign from your Lord [104] that I can make for you out of clay a figure of a bird [105], then breathe [106] into it and it will become alive, by the permission of Allah [107]. And I will heal [108] the blind and the leper [109] and give life to the dead, by permission of Allah [110]. And I can tell you what you have eaten and what you have stored in your homes [111]. Surely, in that you have signs, for you, if you believe."
Hazrat Isa (AS) was sent specifically to Bani Israeel, not to all mankind.
This proves that the Quraysh, being from Bani Ismail, were not included under his mission, and thus remained on Ibrahim’s religion until the coming of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
This verse lists miracles as signs confirming Prophethood, which Isa (AS) presented to his people.
Creating an image of a living creature was allowed in earlier Shari‘ahs.
Hazrat Isa (AS) would shape a clay bird, showing the miracle—not as art, but as divine proof.
He would breathe into the clay bird, and it would come to life, showing the power of du‘a and sacred breath of Prophets and Saints.
Though Isa (AS) brought life to it, he always acknowledged it was by Allah’s permission, showing total servitude to Allah.
Hazrat Isa (AS) cured those born blind, lepers, and those with incurable diseases, by Allah’s will.
This supports that miraculous healing is also possible through blessed saints of Allah.
At the time of Isa (AS), medical science was highly advanced, yet he performed miracles far beyond its reach.
This includes:
Giving life to the dead,
Curing those born blind and total lepers.
Each Prophet’s miracles matched the challenges of their era.
Hazrat Isa (AS) revived four known individuals:
A‘zar, his friend, lived for years after revival.
A young man from a funeral procession.
A girl, daughter of a grain collector.
Saam, son of Hazrat Nuh (AS), who chose not to return to life.
These show the possibility of revival of the dead by Prophets, and by Allah’s will, also by Saints, like Hazrat Ghaus Azam (RA).
Isa (AS) informed people of:
What they had eaten,
What they had stored,
And even future consumption, reflecting divinely inspired knowledge.
If Isa (AS) had this knowledge, the knowledge of the Holy Prophet ﷺ—the Seal of Prophets—is far superior.
All this proves that Ilm-e-Ghaib (Knowledge of the Unseen) is among the miracles of Prophets.
The tafsir of Surah Imran verse 49 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Imran ayat 48 which provides the complete commentary from verse 48 through 51.
(3:49) and he will be a Messenger to the Children of Israel.’ (And when he came to them he said): ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will make for you from clay the likeness of a bird and then I will breathe into it and by the leave of Allah it will become a bird. I will also heal the blind and the leper, and by the leave of Allah bring the dead to life. I will also inform you of what things you eat and what you treasure up in your houses. Surely this is a sign for you if you are true believ-ers.[45]
45. It is hinted here that these signs are sufficient proof that Jesus was designated by God, the Creator and Sovereign of the universe, provided people are prepared to accept the truth instead of obstinately clinging to their prejudiced views. This is further proof that Jesus had been entrusted with a mission by God. Had he not been designated by God but by an imposter he would surely have attempted to found an independent religion, exploiting his miracles to lead people away from their original faith. However, Jesus believed in, and confirmed, the validity of the teachings of the original religion which had been preached at God’s behest by the earlier Prophets.
