📖 Commentary of Verse 24 (Surah Al-Insan)

"So be steadfast[36] for the Command of your Lord. But never obey from among them a sinner or an ungrateful[37] one."

[36] Steadfastness in the Command of Allah

  • This verse advises the Prophet ﷺ (and by extension, all believers) to remain steadfast and patient in carrying out the Divine Command.

  • The verse encourages continued perseverance in spreading the message of Islam and dealing with the hardships that may come from opposition.

  • Whether it involves the propagation of Islam or enduring the difficulties brought by enemies and challenges, believers are urged to remain firm in their faith and mission.

  • It also highlights the importance of patience in facing trials and the application of Islamic laws despite external pressure.

[37] Reason for its Revelation

  • This verse was revealed in response to an incident involving Waleed bin Mugheerah and Utbah bin Rabeeah, who tried to entice the Prophet ﷺ with offers of marriage and wealth, asking him to abandon the message of Islam.

  • Utbah promised his daughter in marriage to the Prophet ﷺ without a dowry, and Waleed promised great wealth, hoping to dissuade the Prophet from continuing his mission.

  • In response, Allah revealed this verse, emphasizing that steadfastness is required in the face of temptation or promises of worldly gain.

  • The verse also warns that the Prophet ﷺ should never obey those who are ungrateful or sinful, such as these two figures who rejected the message of Islam despite their worldly power.
