📖 Commentary of Surah Bani Isra’il – Verse 105

"And We sent down the Quran with truth and it has come down [218] for truth, and We have not sent you down but as a bearer of glad tidings and as a Warner [219]."

✅ [218] The Quran’s Perfect Preservation

The Quran was revealed exactly as Allah Almighty intended, without any change or alteration throughout its transmission. It has reached us in the same pure and uncorrupted form as it was revealed. This demonstrates the trustworthiness and honesty of Hazrat Jibraeel (Gabriel), the Holy Prophet ﷺ, and the Noble Companions.

The verse:
"And We sent down the Quran with Truth and it has come down for truth" (17:105)
is considered a cure for ailments. It is narrated that placing a hand on the afflicted area and reciting this verse, then blowing on it, can bring healing by the will of Allah. This Dua was taught by Hazrat Khizr (peace be upon him) to Hazrat Muhammad bin Samaak (peace be upon him) as mentioned in Tafseer Roohul Bayaan.

✅ [219] The Prophet’s Role as a Messenger

This verse clarifies that the Prophet ﷺ is sent only as a bringer of glad tidings and a warner. He is not responsible for compelling guidance upon people, nor will he be questioned on the Day of Judgement for their acceptance or rejection of faith. Allah says:
"And you shall not be questioned about the inmates of Hell" (2:119).

However, this does not mean that the Prophet ﷺ has no authority. By Allah’s permission, he is empowered to carry out his duties and convey the message.

Ibn-Kathir

105. And with truth We have sent it down, and with truth it has descended. And We have sent you as nothing but a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner. 106. And a Qur’an which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.

The Revelation of the Qur’an in Stages

Allah tells us that His Book, the Glorious Qur’an, has been sent with truth, i.e., it contains the truth, as Allah says:

﴿لَّـكِنِ اللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ إِلَيْكَ أَنزَلَهُ بِعِلْمِهِ وَالْمَلَـئِكَةُ يَشْهَدُونَ﴾

(But Allah bears witness to that which He has sent down unto you; He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness) ﴿4:166﴾ meaning, it contains the knowledge which Allah wanted to teach to you, with His rulings, commands and prohibitions.

﴿وَبِالْحَقِّ نَزَلَ﴾

(and with truth it has descended.) means, “It has been sent down to you, O Muhammad, preserved and protected, not contaminated or mixed with anything else, with nothing added or taken away. It has come to you with the truth, brought down by one mighty in power, trustworthy and strong, one who is obeyed by the higher group (angels).’

﴿وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَاكَ﴾

(And We have sent you) O Muhammad

﴿إِلاَّ مُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا﴾

(as nothing but a bearer of glad tidings and a warner). a bearer of glad tidings for the believers who obey you and a warner to the disbelievers who disobey you.

﴿وَقُرْءانًا فَرَقْنَاهُ﴾

(And (it is) a Qur’an which We have divided), The word translated here as “We have divided” may be read in two ways. If it is read as “Faraqnahu”, with no Shaddah, the meaning is: `We have made it depart from Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz to Bayt Al-`Izzah in the lowest heaven, then it was revealed in stages to the Messenger of Allah, according to events, over a period of twenty-three years.’ This was narrated by `Ikrimah from Ibn `Abbas. It was also narrated that Ibn `Abbas read it as “Farraqnahu”, with a Shaddah, meaning, `We revealed it Ayah by Ayah , and have explained it and made it clear.’ Hence Allah says:

﴿لِتَقْرَأَهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ﴾

(in order that you might recite it to men), meaning, convey it to the people and recite it to them,

﴿عَلَى مُكْثٍ﴾

(at intervals.) meaning slowly.

﴿وَنَزَّلْنَـهُ تَنْزِيلاً﴾

(And We have revealed it by stages.) means, little by little.

(17:105) We have sent down the Qur’an with the Truth, and it is with the Truth that it has descended. And We have not sent you but to proclaim good news and to warn.[118]

Ala-Maududi

(17:105) We have sent down the Qur’an with the Truth, and it is with the Truth that it has descended. And We have not sent you but to proclaim good news and to warn.[118]

118. That is, it is not your responsibility to cause, in a supernatural manner, springs to gush forth or gardens to grow or pieces of the sky to fall down in order to convince those people who do not judge the Quran by its teachings nor decide between the truth and falsehood on merit. As the Quran has been sent down with truth, you should present it before the people and tell them plainly that the one, who believes, does so for his own good and the one who rejects it, does it at his own peril.

(105) And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
