(18) Whoever should desire the immediate[734] - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished. (Saheen International Translation)

Surah Al-Isra Ayat 18 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi
  • Shaheen International

48. The quest of this world is evil when this is done by making the person unmindful of his Creator, or when the person does not worry about differentiating lawful from the unlawful; or when he does not have faith in the Hereafter by believing that this world is the ultimate thing in life, or makes the religion as a means of worldly achievements, as is the case with the infidels, the sinners and the hypocrites.

49. This means you will only obtain material things that is put out for you, whether you try to achieve this through your careful planning or through easy circumstances. Therefore, a person should not waste his hereafter by concentrating on worldly gains only. The heart of the believer is in this world, the world is not in his heart. The ship floats on water, but if the water comes in the ship it will sink.

Ibn-Kathir

18. Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn therein disgraced and rejected. 19. And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer, then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, (rewarded by Allah).

The Reward of Those who desire this World and Those who desire the Hereafter

Allah tells us that not everyone who desires this world and its luxuries gets what he wants. That is attained by those whom Allah wants to have it, and they get what He wills that they should get. This Ayah narrows down the general statements made in other Ayat. Allah says:

﴿عَجَّلْنَا لَهُ فِيهَا مَا نَشَآءُ لِمَن نُّرِيدُ ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا لَهُ جَهَنَّمَ﴾

(We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell) meaning, in the Hereafter,

﴿يَصْلَـهَآ﴾

(he will burn therein) means, he will enter it until it covers him on all sides,

﴿مَذْمُومًا﴾

(disgraced) means, blamed for his bad behaviour and evil deeds, because he chose the transient over the eternal,

﴿مَّدْحُورًا﴾

(rejected.) means, far away (from Allah’s mercy), humiliated and put to shame.

﴿وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الاٌّخِرَةَ﴾

(And whoever desires the Hereafter) wanting the Hereafter and its blessings and delights,

﴿وَسَعَى لَهَا سَعْيَهَا﴾

(and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it) seeking it in the right way, which is following the Messenger .

﴿وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ﴾

(while he is a believer,) means, his heart has faith, i.e., he believes in the reward and punishment,

﴿فَأُولَـئِكَ كَانَ سَعْيُهُم مَّشْكُورًا﴾

(then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, (rewarded by Allah).)

(17:18) If anyone desires immediate benefits,[19] We hasten to grant whatever benefits We will in the present life to whomsoever We please, but thereafter We decree for him Hell wherein he shall burn, condemned and rejected.[20]

Ala-Maududi

(17:18) If anyone desires immediate benefits,[19] We hasten to grant whatever benefits We will in the present life to whomsoever We please, but thereafter We decree for him Hell wherein he shall burn, condemned and rejected.[20]

19. The Arabic word ajilah literally means something which can be had immediately, but the Quran employs it as a term for “this world” which yields its advantages and results in this worldly life. Its antonym is Akhirat (Hereafter) which will yield its advantages and results after death in the life of the next world.

20. The person who does not believe in the life of the Hereafter deserves Hell, because he strives only for the successes and good things of this world and his endeavors are confined to material objects. Consequently, such a person becomes a mere worshiper of this world and adopts wrong conduct, for he has no sense of personal responsibility and accountability to God and ultimately deserves the torment of Hell.

(18) Whoever should desire the immediate[734] - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.

[734]- i.e., worldly gratifications.
