📖 Commentary of Surah Bani Isra’il – Verse 41

"And no doubt, We explain in this Qur’an in different ways that they understand [93], and nothing may increase in them by it but hatred [94]."

✅ [93] Varied Styles for Universal Guidance

This verse highlights that Allah has explained the same truths in multiple styles throughout the Qur’an—through proofs, parables, stories, commands, and wisdom.

The purpose is to reach all types of people:

  • Some are moved by logical arguments,

  • Some by emotional advice,

  • Others by examples and historical lessons.

Since the Qur’an is for all of humanity, it uses diverse approaches to appeal to every heart and intellect.

✅ [94] The Qur’an Increases Hatred in the Hardened

This warns that those whose hearts lack love and reverence for the Holy Prophet ﷺ will not benefit from the Qur’an.

Instead, it may even harden them further, causing an increase in rejection and hatred.
Just as:

  • Rain revives some trees but destroys others,

  • And nutritious food strengthens some bodies but harms the weak,
Similarly, the Qur’an purifies some souls, while it becomes a trial for the arrogant and faithless.

That is why a non-believer is only given the Qur’an after he sincerely recites the Kalima, to ensure his heart is ready for divine truth.

Ibn-Kathir

41. And surely, We have explained in this Qur’an that they may take heed, but it increases them in naught save aversion.) Allah says:

﴿وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِى هَـذَا الْقُرْءَانِ﴾

(And surely, We have explained in this Qur’an) meaning, `We have explained Our warni- ngs so that they may remember the proof, evidence and exhorta- tions contained there- in, and be prevented from Shirk, wrong- doing and scandal.’

﴿وَمَا يَزِيدُهُمْ﴾

(but it increases them in naught) the wrong- doers among them

﴿إِلاَّ نُفُورًا﴾

(save aversion.) aversion towards the truth; they go further away from it.

(17:41) We have expounded (the Truth) in diverse ways in this Qur’an that they might take it to heart but all this only aggravates their aversion.

Ala-Maududi
