📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Jāthiyah – Verse 9

"And when he comes to know anything from Our Message, he takes it in mockery [14]. For such one is a disgraceful [15] punishment."

✅ [14] Mocking the Divine Message

  1. This refers to those who, upon hearing any part of Allah’s message, mock it. For example, Nadr bin Harith would say: “Muhammad Mustapha ﷺ tells you stories about Pharaoh and Hamaan, and I narrate to you tales of Rustam and Isfandyaar. My Qur’an is better than his Qur’an.”

✅ [15] Disgraceful Punishment Awaits

  1. Such mockers will face disgraceful punishment in the grave, where angels will scold and reprimand them. This verse hints at the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of Hell will follow after it.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Jathiya verse 9 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Jathiya ayat 6 which provides the complete commentary from verse 6 through 11.

(45:9) Whenever he comes to know anything of Our Signs, he makes them an object of jest.[10] For such there awaits a humiliating chastisement.

Ala-Maududi

(45:9) Whenever he comes to know anything of Our Signs, he makes them an object of jest.[10] For such there awaits a humiliating chastisement.

10. That is, he does not rest content with mocking any one particular revelation, but mocks all the revelations. For example, when he hears that a particular thing has been mentioned in the Quran, he does not take it in its straightforward meaning, but first puts a crooked meaning on it in order to make it a subject of ridicule and mockery, then after making fun of it, says: These are strange things: one daily hears one or the other funny thing from them.

(9) And when he knows anything of Our verses, he takes them in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.
