And Their Riches Will Not Assist Them When They Perish

11. "And their riches will not assist [9] them when they perish."

Explanation:

Helplessness of Wealth in Death:

The verse refers to the ultimate futility of wealth for the disbeliever or negligent person when facing death. Despite accumulating riches, these worldly possessions cannot offer protection or relief when the person faces the consequences of their actions in the Hereafter.

Death of the Infidel (Destruction):

The death of an infidel, like Umayyah bin Khalf in the Battle of Badr, is described as "destruction" because they pass away without fulfilling their true purpose in life. They are not able to benefit from their wealth or worldly achievements in the afterlife.

Key Lessons:

Types of Death:

  • Wafaat: The death of a believer who has lived a purposeful life in accordance with Allah's commands.
  • Urs: The death of a special believer, is seen as a time of union with Allah.
  • Destruction: The death of the disbeliever and negligent person, who dies without fulfilling the goals of life, like an inefficient worker who faces punishment.

Wealth's Futility at Death:

For the disbeliever, wealth becomes utterly useless when they face death and the consequences of their actions. However, the believer’s wealth, deeds, and loved ones can intercede for them and provide help in the Hereafter.

The Ultimate Goal of Life:

Life’s true goal is not the accumulation of wealth but to live righteously and in submission to Allah, so that wealth and all that one accumulates may aid them in the Hereafter.

Ala-Maududi

(92:11) and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes.[6]

6. In other words it means that he has to die one day and leave behind in the world whatever he had amassed for his ease and enjoyment. If he did not earn and send forward something for the Hereafter, what would this wealth avail him? He will not take his palatial residence, his majestic conveyance, his property and wealth into the grave.

(11) And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?[1938]

[1938]- i.e., when he dies or is destroyed. It can also mean when he falls into the Hellfire.
