Tafsir (Commentary) of the Verse: "Who Gives Wealth to Become Purified" (18)

The Meaning of the Verse:

This verse highlights the virtue of giving wealth in the way of Allah for purification. The act of charity, especially the giving of wealth with sincerity, is not just a material contribution but is a means of spiritual purification. It signifies that charity when done for the sake of Allah, purifies the soul and brings one closer to Allah’s mercy and blessings.

Key Issues Arising from the Verse:

1. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique’s Charities Are Accepted by Allah:

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique's charitable acts are highly praised, particularly because they are performed with sincerity and for the pleasure of Allah. For example, during the Battle of Tabuk, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) gave away his entire wealth for the cause of Allah, demonstrating his selflessness and devotion. The Holy Prophet ﷺ also displayed a similar attitude towards spending his wealth, giving without hesitation, much like a father who freely spends the wealth of an obedient son. The land for Masjid-e-Nabawi, on which the Green Dome and the garden of Paradise stand today, was also generously endowed by Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA). Furthermore, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) freed Hazrat Bilal and many other slaves, highlighting his commitment to noble causes and charity.

2. Sincerity in Charity:

The sincerity of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique’s charitable acts is emphasized in this verse. Allah Almighty Himself testifies to the purity of intention behind his actions. Every act of charity by Hazrat Abu Bakr is filled with genuine sincerity, a key aspect of why his contributions are so highly valued and accepted by Allah. This sincerity goes beyond the material donation and touches the hearts of the recipients, marking it as a spiritually fulfilling act.

3. Charity as a Means of Purification of the Heart:

The phrase "to become purified" in this verse does not refer to the obligatory Zakat (which became obligatory after the Hijrah), but rather to the spiritual purification that comes from charity. This highlights the concept that charity, when given sincerely, purifies the heart, leading to a brighter soul. This act of giving cleanses the giver's heart from selfishness and greed, bringing them closer to Allah’s mercy. The wealth, water, and food provided by the pious sages, including Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), are seen as a means of achieving spiritual clarity and brightness of the heart. Additionally, the water from the Holy Prophet ﷺ is regarded as a means of healing and spiritual cure.

Ala-Maududi

(92:18) the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself;[9]

9. This does not mean that no one will enter the fire except the most wretched one, and no one will be saved from it except the most pious one but the object is to describe the extremely contradictory fate of the two extremely contradictory characters. One of them is the person who belies the teachings of Allah and His Messenger and turns away from obedience; the other one is the person, who not only believes but also spends his wealth in the cause of Allah sincerely, without any desire for display and reputation, only in order to be regarded as a pure man in His eyes. Both these types of character were present in the Makkah society of that day. Therefore, without mentioning any name, the people have been told that the man of the first type of character only will burn in the fire of Hell and not the man of the second type of character. The man of the second type of character only will be kept away from it and not the man of the first type of character.
