Tafsir (Commentary) of the Verse: "And He Owes No Favours to Anyone for Recompense" (19)

The Reason for the Revelation:

This verse was revealed to refute the false claims made by some of the infidels of Makkah. They insinuated that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique had freed Hazrat Bilal (RA) from slavery in exchange for a debt owed to him, possibly by Hazrat Bilal or Umayyah bin Khalf. The verse clarifies that Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) owes no favors or debts to anyone for his charitable act. His actions were purely for the sake of Allah and not for any personal recompense. It also highlights the fact that while Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) does not owe favors to people in return, he remains greatly indebted to Allah Almighty for His mercy and guidance.

Key Issues Arising from the Verse:

1. Decreasing the Virtues of the Pious is the Way of the Infidels:

One of the tactics of the infidels was to try and diminish the virtues of the pious individuals, like Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), by casting doubt on their sincerity or by creating false narratives. By suggesting that Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) freed Hazrat Bilal (RA) out of personal interest or because of some favor owed, they sought to diminish the true value of his actions. This verse refutes such claims and establishes the truth of Hazrat Abu Bakr’s (RA) selfless devotion to Allah’s cause.

2. Describing Their Greatness After Removing All Taunting Remarks is the Way of Allah Almighty:

On the other hand, Allah Almighty’s way is to describe the greatness of the pious and to highlight their virtues in the most honorable way. In this verse, Allah removes any doubt or taunt associated with Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) and affirms his noble actions. This approach encourages believers to understand and respect the true intentions of the pious individuals, free from malicious assumptions or accusations.

3. Giving in the Path of Allah is No Loss, But the Highest Form of Profit:

This verse also emphasizes that giving wealth in the way of Allah, whether it is for freeing slaves or for charity, is not a loss but a great profit. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) invested his wealth in the path of Allah, not seeking any material gain but rather seeking Allah’s pleasure and reward. The verse teaches that spending in Allah’s way results in spiritual profit and everlasting reward, far superior to any temporal gain one might seek in this world.
