📖 Commentary of Quran 70:40 (Surah Al-Ma'arij)

But no! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, that We are certainly capable. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [35] The Lord of Multiple Easts and Wests

🔹 The sun rises and sets at a slightly different point each day.
🔹 There are 360 points of sunrise and sunset throughout the year, hence the plural form is used.
🔹 This verse emphasizes Allah’s (اللَّهُ ) supreme control over the entire cosmos.

✅ Allah's Absolute Power

🔹 By swearing upon the East and West, Allah (اللَّهُ ) affirms His power over creation and resurrection.
🔹 If He controls the constant movement of celestial bodies, then bringing back humans for Judgment is easy for Him.
🔹 This verse refutes disbelievers who doubt resurrection and accountability.

(70:40) I swear[27] by the Lord of the easts and the wests[28] that We have the power

Ala-Maududi

(70:40) I swear[27] by the Lord of the easts and the wests[28] that We have the power

27. That is, the truth is not that which these people think it is.

28. Here, Allah has sworn an oath by Himself. The words Easts and Wests have been used because the sun rises and sets at a new angle every day during the year, and goes on rising and setting successively at different times around the globe. Thus considered the Easts and the Wests are not one but many. From another point of view as against the north and the south there is a direction of east and a direction of west. On this basis in (Surah Ash-Shuara, Ayat 28) and (Surah Al-Muzzammil, Ayat 19) the words Rabb-ulrnashriqi wal-maghrib have been used. From still another view-point the earth has two easts and two wests, for when the sun sets on one hemisphere, it rises on the other. On this basis the words Rabb-ul-mashriqayn wa Rabb-ulmaghribayn (Lord of two easts and two wests) have been used in (Surah Ar-Rahman, Ayat 17). For further explanation, see (Surah Ar-Rahman, ayat 17) note 17.

(40) So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings[1758] that indeed We are able

[1758]- i.e., Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā), who determines the point at which the sun, moon and stars rise and set according to season and every position of observation.
