📖 Commentary of Verse 58 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

“And when you call the people for Prayer [179], they make a mockery and a plaything of it. That is because they are people who do not understand [180].”

✅ [179] Example of Mockery Against the Call to Prayer

Imam Saadi (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated an incident from Madinah where a Christian would mock the Mu’adhdhin’s proclamation, “I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” He would curse the Prophet, saying, “Let the liar (Allah forbid) burn!”
One night, the Christian’s servant forgot to extinguish a fire, which miraculously engulfed and burned the entire household, highlighting the divine justice and power of Allah.

✅ [180] Lessons and Reflections

From this verse and incident, several important points emerge:

  1. The Adhan (call to prayer) is a prerequisite for the five daily prayers, with this verse serving as proof of its significance in Islam.

  2. Pious dreams hold religious reliability, and the confirmation of Adhan through such dreams aligns with the Holy Qur'an’s teachings.

  3. Mocking any religious act is a grave sin and tantamount to infidelity. This includes ridiculing the Adhan, the Masjid, the Ka'bah, Salaah, or any other act of worship. Such behavior shows a lack of understanding and is strongly condemned.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maidah verse 58 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maidah ayat 58 which provides the complete commentary from verse 57 through 58.

(5:58) And when you call for Prayer, they take it for a mockery and sport.[89] That is because they are a people who do not understand.[90]

Ala-Maududi

(5:58) And when you call for Prayer, they take it for a mockery and sport.[89] That is because they are a people who do not understand.[90]

89. When they hear the call to Prayer the unbelievers make fun of it by mimicry, pervert its words to ridicule it, and utter disparaging and taunting remarks about it.

90. These are merely acts of stupidity on the part of unbelievers. Had they not been ignorant and foolish they would not have stooped to such base tactics, despite their significant differences with the Muslims on religious questions. After all, can any reasonable person be happy to see the people who call to the worship of God be ridiculed and mocked?

(58) And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason.
