    لَّقَدۡ كَفَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَٰثَةٖۘ وَمَا مِنۡ إِلَٰهٍ إِلَّآ إِلَٰهٞ وَٰحِدٞۚ وَإِن لَّمۡ يَنتَهُواْ عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

    Transliteration:( laqad kafaral lazeena qaalooo innal laaha saalisu salaasah; wa maa min ilaahin illaaa Ilaahunw Waahid; wa illam yantahoo 'ammaa yaqooloona layamas sannal lazeena kafaroo minhum 'azaabun aleem )

    73. Indeed, those are infidels who say: "Allah is the third of three" [219]. There is no god but the one God. And if they do not cease from what they are saying, those who disbelieve among them will surely be afflicted with a painful punishment [220]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

    (73) They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allāh is the third of three."[276] And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. (Saheen International Translation)

    219. It is the belief of the Christian sects Marcosin and Nastooriya that Allah is divided into three. Father, Son, and the holy spirit. Their trinity consists of God the father, Hazrat Isa on whom be peace) the son and Hazrat Jibraeel as the holy spirit. This is the meaning of trinity.

    220. By this, it means that though all of them are infidels those who remain infidels until death are deserving of this punishment because verification is based on one's time of death. Hence it is important that one should repent quickly. For this reason, repentance is the subject of the discussion that follows.

    (5:73) Those who said: ‘Allah is one of the Three’, certainly they disbelieved, for there is no god save the One God. And if they do not give up this claim, all who have disbelieved among them shall be subjected to painful chastisement.

    Ala-Maududi

    There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.

    (73) They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allāh is the third of three."[276] And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

    [276]- i.e., one part of three, referring to the Christian concept of trinity.
