31. In that He made it soft in a suitable way so that you may reside on it, do your farming. construct buildings, etc. The earth is made. neither as hard as iron, nor fluid like water. Allah be Praised!
32. Eat lawful and wholesome sustenance, either of your own earning or from the earning of others, like the inherited wealth. The great Sufi sages say that eat physical sustenance for the preservation of the body, and use spiritual sourishment for the development of the soul.
From this we learn that it is obligatory to eat because it preserves life, and life is the basis of all acts of worship. For this reason it is forbidden to fast until death and go on a hunger strike. We also learn that from that which Allah Almighty has provided you eat a little and feed a little. Do not try to eat everything yourself.
33. On the Day of Judgement, for the accountability. Thus, do not eat such a food, which will prove to be a burden for you tomorrow. Thus, after eating, mention is made of the Hereafter.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Mulk verse 15 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Mulk ayat 12 which provides the complete commentary from verse 12 through 15.
(67:15) He it is Who made the earth subservient to you. So traverse in its tracks and partake of the sustenance[23] He has provided. To Him will you be resurrected.[24]
23 That is, this earth has not become subdued for you of its own accord, and the provisions also that you are eating have not become available here by themselves, but Allah has so arranged it by His wisdom and power that your life became possible here and this splendid globe became so peaceful that you are moving about on it with full peace of mind, and it has become such a vast table spread with food that it contains endless and limitless provisions for your sustenance. If you are not lost in heedlessness and look about yourself intelligently, you will find how much wisdom underlies in the making of this earth habitable for you and arranging in it immeasurable stores of provisions for you. For explanation, see (Surah An-Naml, ayat 60-64) note 73,74,81; (Surah YaSeen, ayat 35-37) note 29,32; (Surah Al-Momin, ayat 64) note 91,92; (Surah Az-Zukhruf, ayat 10) note 7, (Surah Al-Jathiyah, ayat 5) note 7, (Surah Qaf, ayat 15) note 18.
24. That is, while you move about on the earth and eat of what Allah has provided for you here, you should not forget that ultimately you have to appear before God one day.
[1717]- i.e., stable and subservient.
