📖 Commentary of Verse 26 (Surah Al-Mulk)

"Say, 'The knowledge [51] of it is with Allah alone, and I am only a clear warner [52].'"

[51] Knowledge of the Unseen Belongs to Allah Alone

In this verse, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is instructed to declare that the knowledge of the Day of Judgment and its exact time lies with Allah alone. No human, including the Prophet, can possess knowledge of the unseen except through divine revelation. The verse highlights that humans cannot predict or determine the timing of such events through assumptions, calculations, or any earthly means—only Allah knows.

[52] The Prophet as a Warner

While the Prophet (PBUH) does not know the exact time of the Day of Judgment, he is a clear warner, sent by Allah to deliver the message to the people. His role is to warn humanity about the truth of the Hereafter, the consequences of disbelief, and the need for repentance and faith in Allah. This further emphasizes that the Prophet’s mission is to guide and warn, not to disclose the exact timing of events that only Allah controls.

Clarification on the Prophet’s Knowledge of the Day of Judgment

The verse may seem to suggest that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has no knowledge of the Day of Judgment, but this does not mean he was unaware of it. In fact, the Prophet has been given knowledge of many signs of the Hour. The famous narration where the Prophet says, "I and the Day of Judgment are like these two fingers joined" reflects the closeness of the event to his mission. He also foretold many signs and predicted the Day of Judgment would occur on a Friday.

Please refer to Surah Mulk ayat 20 which provides the complete commentary from verse 20 through 27.

(67:26) Say: “Allah alone knows about that; and I am no more than a plain warner.”[36]

Ala-Maududi

(67:26) Say: “Allah alone knows about that; and I am no more than a plain warner.”[36]

36. That is, this I know that it will certainly come, and knowing this much only is enough for warning the people before its actual occurrence. As for the question when it will actually come, the knowledge of it is with Allah, not with me, and there is no need of this knowledge for administering the warning. This can be better understood by an example. As to the exact time when a person will die, it is only known to Allah; however, all know that everyone has to die one day. Our this knowledge is enough that we may warn a heedless friend of ours that he should look after himself and his interests before death. For this warning it is not necessary to know the exact day on which he will die.

(26) Say, "The knowledge is only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."
