44. Then We sent Our Messengers one after the other. Whenever a messenger came to any nation they belied him, then We caused their latter to meet the former [67], and We made them tales [68], then be away (69) the people who do not believe. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(44) Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations.[956] So away with a people who do not believe. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Mu’minoon – Verse 44

"Then We sent Our Messengers one after the other. Whenever a messenger came to any nation they belied him, then We caused their latter to meet the former [67], and We made them tales [68], then be away [69] the people who do not believe."

✅ [67] Successive Destruction

This means that when each nation denied their Prophet, they were destroyed like those before them. The phrase “caused their latter to meet the former” refers to destruction, not physical gathering in Hell or Barzakh—since disbelievers from different nations will not always share the same abode.

✅ [68] Only Stories Remain

None of these nations were spared; they were wiped out entirely. All that remains are their stories, preserved in the Holy Qur’an as lessons—reminders of the consequences of denying truth.

✅ [69] Distance from Divine Mercy

The command “be away” means that such people—those who refuse to believe—are cast far from Allah’s mercy. This is because they turned away from the guidance of the Prophets, and thus remained deprived of divine attention and mercy.

Ala-Maududi

(23:44) Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Whenever a Messenger came to his people they rejected him, calling him a liar. Thereupon, We made each people to follow the other (to its doom), reducing them to mere tales (of the past). Scourged be the people who do not believe![38]

38. That is, those who do not believe in the Messengers.

(44) Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations.[956] So away with a people who do not believe.
