he Rusted Hearts – Commentary (Tafseer) of the Verse 83:14

"Indeed no! Rather, what they have earned has rusted their hearts."

The Effect of Sins on the Heart

This verse explains that sins darken and corrupt the heart.

  • Repeated sins cause the heart to become rusty and hardened, making it unreceptive to truth.
  • Good deeds, especially being in the company of the pious, help in purifying the heart.
  • The more a person indulges in sinful actions, the more difficult it becomes for them to recognize and accept guidance.

Thus, spiritual purity is maintained through righteousness, while sins lead to complete darkness in the heart.

Ibn-Kathir

Ala-Maududi

(83:14) No indeed! The truth is that their hearts have become rusted on account of their evil deeds.[7]

7. That is, they have no good reason for regarding the meting out of rewards and punishments as unreal. What has made them say is this: Is it that their hearts have become rusty because of their sins; therefore, a thing which is thoroughly reasonable appears unreal and unreasonable to them. The explanation of this rust as given by the Prophet (peace be upon him) is as follows: When a servant commits a sin, it marks a black stain on his heart. If he offers repentance, the stain is washed off, but if he persists in wrongdoing, it spreads over the entire heart. (Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah, Ibn Jarir, Hakim, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Hibban and others).

(14) No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.[1880]

[1880]- i.e., their sins.
