Taking Full Measure – Commentary (Tafseer) of the Verse 83:2

"They are those who when they take from others take it full."

Worldly and Hereafter Consequences

This verse highlights the hypocrisy of those who demand full measure for themselves but cheat others when giving. Such deceit has severe consequences:

  • In the world:

    • People curse and abuse such traders.
    • They lose credibility, and their business fails.
    • Their wealth lacks barakah (blessings).
  • In the Hereafter:

    • This sin remains unforgiven because it violates human rights.
    • Unlawful earnings corrupt the heart, leading to evil thoughts.
    • Good deeds are wiped out due to haram sustenance.

A trader who weighs less is worse than a thief or a dacoit, as he steals under the guise of honesty. Allah Almighty sent down the scale for justice, yet such a person abuses it. This makes him a noble scoundrel—a hidden criminal more dangerous than an open one.

Ala-Maududi

(83:2) those who, when they take from others by measure, take their full share; [2]

2. At several places in the Quran, giving of short measure and weight has been condemned and measuring fully and weighing rightly has been stressed. In Surah Al-Anaam, it has been enjoined: You should use a full measure and a just balance. We charge one only with that much responsibility that one can bear. (Surah Al-Anaam, ayat 152). In Surah Bani Israil, it has been said: Give full measure when you measure and weigh with even scales. (Surah Bani Israil, ayat 35). In Surah Ar-Rahman, it has been stressed: Do not upset the balance: weigh with equity and do not give short weight. (Surah Ar-Rahman, ayat 8-9). The people of the Prophet Shuaib (peace be upon him) were punished for the reason that the evil of giving short measure and weight had become widespread among them and in spite of his counsel and advice they did not refrain from it.

(2) Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
