Mockery of the Believers – Commentary (Tafseer) of the Verse 83:31

"And when they return to their families, they pass by joking."

The Three Major Crimes of the Disbelievers

This verse highlights the arrogant attitude of the disbelievers towards the believers. They were guilty of three major wrongdoings in the world:

  1. Mocking the believers – They ridiculed the faith and sincerity of those who believed in Allah.
  2. Making evil gestures – They winked, signaled, and made insulting expressions when seeing the believers.
  3. Rejoicing in sin – They felt happiness and pride in their sinful acts instead of repenting.

Lessons from This Verse

  • Backbiting is not just verbal; it also includes non-verbal gestures like mocking expressions, winking, and secretive hints.
  • Even though disbelievers are not held accountable for acts of worship, they are still responsible for their moral conduct.
  • Feeling joy while committing sins is itself a sin and reflects the character of disbelievers.

This verse serves as a warning against arrogance, mockery, and pride in wrongdoing.
