📖 Commentary of Verse 15 (Surah Al-Muzzammil)

“Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger, who is a witness against you, just as We sent a Messenger towards Pharaoh.”

✅ Universal Address in the Verse [18]

  • The word “to you” could refer to:

    • The people of Makkah,

    • Or all believers,

    • Or all mankind,

    • Or even the entire creation.

  • Each possibility carries great wisdom and benefit.

  • The Messenger here is our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, who is described as:

“A warner to the entire world” (Surah 25:6),
“And We sent you not, but as a mercy for all the worlds” (Surah 21:107).

✅ The Status of the Messenger ﷺ [19]

  • The difference between us and the Prophet ﷺ lies in both creation and purpose:

    • We are created beings, but the Prophet ﷺ is created and also sent by Allah (اللَّهُ ).

  • Like an ambassador sent on behalf of a king, the Prophet’s every word and action carries divine responsibility.

  • We came into the world to learn, but the Prophet ﷺ came fully taught by Allah (اللَّهُ ).

✅ The Prophet ﷺ as a Witness [20]

  • The word "Shahid" (witness) means:

    • One who is present, watching, and aware.

    • One who is beloved and constantly observing the ummah.

  • This implies:

    • Be bashful and avoid sins, as your Beloved Prophet ﷺ is a witness over your actions.

✅ Comparison with the Messenger to Pharaoh [21]

  • Just like Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) was sent to Pharaoh,

    • Similarly, our Prophet ﷺ is sent to warn and guide.

  • Hazrat Harun (peace be upon him) was sent as minister, just as there were companions aiding the mission of the Prophet ﷺ.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Muzzammil verse 15 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muzzammil ayat 10 which provides the complete commentary from verse 10 through 18.

(73:15) Surely[15] We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you,[16] just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh.

Ala-Maududi

(73:15) Surely[15] We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you,[16] just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh.

15. The address now turns to the disbelievers of Makkah, who were denying the Prophet (peace be upon him) and persecuting him relentlessly.

16. Sending the Prophet (peace be upon him) to be a witness over the people also means that he should testify to the truth by his word and deed before them in the world and also that in the Hereafter when Allah’s court is established, he will testify that he had presented the whole truth before the people in the world. For further explanation, see (Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 143); (Surah An-Nisa, ayat 41) note 64; (Surah An-Nahl, Ayat 84); (Surah An-Nahl, Ayat 89); (Surah Al-Ahzab, ayat 45) note 82; (Surah Al-Fath, ayat 8) note 14.

(15) Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
