2. The Astonishment of People During the Earthquake

1. The Unprecedented Nature of the Earthquake

At the time of this earthquake, those who witness it will exclaim out of astonishment, "What has happened to the earth?" Such general earthquakes have never occurred before. If this earthquake were caused by natural forces like lava or sulphuric acid, only specific places would have been affected. However, this earthquake will be universal, and all principles of philosophy and science will come to an end.

2. The Earthquake After the Second Trumpet

After the sound of the second trumpet, when people are resurrected, they will witness the signs and cracks caused by the earthquake. They will express their astonishment at the unprecedented event. It is important to remember that after emerging from their graves, people will utter specific words, as mentioned in different places in the Holy Qur'aan.

3. The Utterances of the Resurrected

Different groups of people will react differently upon resurrection:

  • The Infidels: They will cry out in despair, "Ah! Woe to us! Who has awakened us from our sleep?" (Surah Ya-Sin, 36:51).
  • The Believers: They will affirm their faith, saying, "This is what the Most Affectionate (Allah) had promised, and the Messengers spoke the truth" (Surah Ya-Sin, 36:51).

4. Silence in the Field of Accountability

As people move toward the Field of Accountability, all will fall silent. The Qur'an states, "And you will not hear but a sound" (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:108). This indicates that there is no inconsistency in the verses of the Qur'an regarding the events of the Day of Judgement.

(99:3) and man will cry out: “What is the matter with her?”[3]

3. Man here may as well imply every man, for after resurrection and coming to senses the first impression of every man will be as to what was happening around him; afterwards he will realize that it was the Resurrection Day. Man may also imply the man who denies the Hereafter, for what he regarded as impossible would be happening in front of him and causing him confusion and bewilderment. As for the believers, they will not be bewildered and confused, for everything would be taking place according to their belief and conviction. To an extent, this second meaning is supported by verse 52 of Surah YaSeen, in which it has been said that the deniers of the Hereafter at that time will exclaim: Ah, who has roused us from our sleeping place? And the reply given would be: This is the same which the Merciful God had promised and the Messengers sent by God had spoken the truth. This verse does not expressly say that this answer to the disbelievers would actually be given by the believers, for there is no indication of it in the verse. The probability, however, is that the believers will give them this answer.

(3) And man says,[1963] "What is [wrong] with it?" -

[1963]- In terror and amazement.
