📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nahl – Verse 121

121. Thankful for His blessings, Allah chose [269] him and guided him to the straight path [270].

✅ Divine Selection of Ibrahim for Prophethood

[269] Allah Almighty chose Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) for prophethood, granting him a sublime status and the honored role of being the father of many prophets. It is important to understand that this selection was not because of Ibrahim’s actions, but rather it was through Allah’s choice that Ibrahim was enabled to perform such noble deeds. Prophethood is a divine gift bestowed only upon those whom Allah selects; it cannot be earned or acquired by human effort. This is linguistically reflected in the Arabic where the verb "ijtaba" (to choose) is used without the letter feh to emphasize the selection by Allah’s will alone.

✅ Lifelong Guidance on the Straight Path

[270] Allah’s guidance was with Ibrahim from the very beginning of his life, ensuring he never strayed into sin or error at any point. This does not imply he was initially misguided and then corrected; rather, the Quran clarifies before mentioning guidance that Ibrahim was never a polytheist. His path was straight from the start, under Allah’s continuous guidance, illustrating the special care bestowed upon His chosen servant.
