📖 Commentary of Surah An-Naml – Verse 88

"And you shall see the mountains, you shall think that they are fixed, but they will be passing (like) the passing of clouds [163]. This is the work of Allah Who made everything with wisdom. Indeed, He is aware of your work."

✅ [163] The Movement of Mountains on the Day of Judgement

This verse describes a scene from the Day of Judgement, where mighty mountains, which seem firm and immovable in the world, will appear to move swiftly like clouds.
This indicates the intensity of cosmic upheaval and the complete transformation of the physical world.

It also reflects Allah’s power and perfection in design—what appears stable and solid is, in reality, fully under His control. The verse concludes by reminding that Allah is fully aware of all human actions, and nothing escapes His knowledge.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Naml verse 88 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Naml ayat 87 which provides the complete commentary from verse 87 through 90.

(27:88) You now see the mountains and consider them firmly fixed, but then they shall pass away even as clouds pass away. That will be the handiwork of Allah Who has created everything with perfect wisdom. He is well aware of what you do.[107]

Ala-Maududi

(27:88) You now see the mountains and consider them firmly fixed, but then they shall pass away even as clouds pass away. That will be the handiwork of Allah Who has created everything with perfect wisdom. He is well aware of what you do.[107]

107. That is, “From such God you should not expect that after giving you the powers of intellect and discrimination and control over things, He will remain unaware of your deeds and actions and will not see how you have been using the delegated authority in the earth.”

(88) And you see the mountains, thinking them motionless,[1089] while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allāh, who perfected all things. Indeed, He is Aware of that which you do.

[1089]- Or "solid and rigid."
