Transliteration:( Wastaghfiril laaha innal laaha kaana Ghafoorar Raheema )
“And seek forgiveness [337] of Allah. Surely Allah is Ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
This command is primarily directed at Tam‘a, urging him to repent for his wrongdoing in stealing and falsely accusing an innocent man.
However, if the verse is understood to be addressed to the Holy Prophet ﷺ, it is based on a deeper spiritual principle:
The good deeds of the righteous may be seen as shortcomings for those closer to Allah.
In this context, the Prophet ﷺ was about to judge based on testimony, as per Islamic law, which is valid. But Allah intervened and redirected the decision, guiding him not to pass judgement in favour of the deceiver. This was not a fault, but a reflection of divine refinement.
Additionally, the verse may also indicate that the Prophet ﷺ was being asked to:
Seek forgiveness on behalf of those who supported Tam‘a unjustly,
So that Allah may forgive their transgression, and
Protect them from repeating such acts of biased group loyalty, which lead to injustice.
Whether it was testifying falsely, supporting the guilty, or criticising valid testimony, these were all acts that required repentance. The verse beautifully reminds us that:
Even if rulers or judges accept testimony in good faith,
Those who abuse the process must still seek Allah’s forgiveness.
Indeed, Allah is Most Forgiving, and Merciful to those who repent with sincerity.
