146. But those who repented and mended (themselves) [426] and held fast to the Rope of Allah and made their religion purely for Allah. Then those are with the Muslims [427]. And soon Allah will grant a great reward for the Muslims [428]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(146) Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allāh, and are sincere in their religion for Allāh, for those will be with the believers. And Allāh is going to give the believers a great reward. (Saheen International Translation)

Surah An-Nisa Ayat 146 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi
  • Shaheen International

426.By this is meant one should repent from hypocrisy and change for the better in future. From this we learn that even the repentance of the worst infidel can be accepted if he sincerely wants to change for the better. We further learn that there is a condition to be followed before repentance can be effected the repenter must change his previous sinful condition to become a better person.

Mere verbal repentance is meaningless in fact it is a joke on the part of the repenter.

427.They will be with the believers in this world and in the Hereafter. From this we learn that to be in company of the pious is a great bounty, as Allah Almighty in this verse has referred to it as a great bounty and reward.

428.  By this is meant Allah Almighty's reward will be beyond your imagination. The bounty of Allah Almighty will be in accordance with His lofty position, not it accordance with your position or title.

Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 144 which provides the complete commentary from verse 144 through 148.

(4:146) except those who re-pent and mend their ways and hold fast to Allah and make their faith exclusive to Allah.[174] Those people shall be numbered with the believers and Allah will certainly bestow on the believers a great reward.

Ala-Maududi

(4:146) except those who re-pent and mend their ways and hold fast to Allah and make their faith exclusive to Allah.[174] Those people shall be numbered with the believers and Allah will certainly bestow on the believers a great reward.

174. To make one’s faith exclusively to God means to concentrate one’s loyalties, concerns, affections, and adorations on God, and not to allow any attachments to strike such deep roots in one’s heart that one may cease to be capable of sacrificing them for His sake.

(146) Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allāh, and are sincere in their religion for Allāh, for those will be with the believers. And Allāh is going to give the believers a great reward.
