Quran Quote  :  But those who do not believe in the Hereafter are ever prone to deviate from the Right Way.

Quran-4:162 Surah An-nisa English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Laakinir raasikhoona fil'ilmi minhum walmu'minoona yu'minoona bimaaa unzila ilaika wa maaa unzila min qablika walmuqeemeenas Salaata walmu'toonaz Zakaata walmu 'minoona billaahi wal yawmil Aakhir; ulaaa'ika sanu'teehim ajran 'azeemaa )

162. But those of them who are firm in knowledge [462] and belief, they believe in what has been revealed to you (O Beloved Prophet) [463] and what has been revealed before you [464]. And they establish Prayer and give Zakah, and those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; to them, We shall give a great reward [465]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(162) But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer [especially] and the givers of zakāh and the believers in Allāh and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward. (Saheen International Translation)

Surah An-Nisa Ayat 162 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi
  • Shaheen International

462. Firm in knowledge is that learned man in whose heart knowledge has seeped in thoroughly. He is like that tree whose roots are firmly entrenched in the ground. This refers to the Ulema of pure beliefs and those who act upon what they preach. eg. Hazrat Sayyedina Abdullah bin Salaam (May Allah be pleased with him) and his Companions who were learned in Jewish Scriptures but later became Muslims and became amongst the Noble Companions of Holy Prophet  ﷺ

463.This means either through saliently conspicuous revelation eg. the Holy QURAN, or through less conspicuous revelation eg. the Hadith of the Holy Prophet ﷺ

Thus, one should have complete faith in both the Holy QURAN and the Hadith sayings and instructions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ
464. It should be remembered that our faith in the previously revealed books is of collective nature while that in the Holy QURAN is comprehensive as well as practical. The two have been mentioned separately to show the difference between the two.
465. From this, we learn that the reward of a practising man of knowledge is greater than the others because a practising man of knowledge has the capacity to make others pious. It is important that the actions of the man of knowledge should become an example of the= Sunnah of the Holy Prophet and each deed of his should serve to propagate Islam.

This also serves to hint that the punishment of an irreligious and non-practising man of knowledge too is worse then that of others because such a person is not only misguided himself but he would misguide others, in that his malpractice will lead others towards malpractices also.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 162 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 160 which provides the complete commentary from verse 160 through 162.

(4:162) Those among them who are firmly rooted in knowledge and the believers, such do believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you.[203] (Those who truly believe) establish the Prayer and pay Zakah, those who firmly believe in Allah and in the Last Day, to them We shall indeed pay a great reward.

Ala-Maududi

(4:162) Those among them who are firmly rooted in knowledge and the believers, such do believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you.[203] (Those who truly believe) establish the Prayer and pay Zakah, those who firmly believe in Allah and in the Last Day, to them We shall indeed pay a great reward.

203. Those well acquainted with the true teachings of the Scriptures, and whose minds are free from prejudice, obduracy, blind imitation of their forefathers and bondage to animal desires, will be disposed to follow those teachings. Their attitude is bound to be altogether different from the general attitude of those Jews apparently immersed in unbelief and transgression. Such people realize, even at first glance, that the Qur’anic teaching is essentially the same as that of the previous Prophets, and hence feel no difficulty in affirming it.

(162) But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer [especially] and the givers of zakāh and the believers in Allāh and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.
