📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 38

"And those who spend their wealth [148] to show off to people [149], and do not believe in Allah or the Last Day. Whoever takes Satan as a companion, then what an evil companion he is [150]."

✅ Spending for Show-Off is Spiritually Worthless [148]

From this we learn:

  • Spending wealth is not always rewarded—
If done with the wrong intention, it becomes sinful rather than praiseworthy.

This verse continues from the theme of the previous one on miserliness, now shifting to wasteful extravagance.

✅ Extravagance and Ego-Based Spending [149]

This includes:

  • Charity given for public image, not for Allah.

  • Lavish weddings or events just to boost status.

  • Spending on customs or rituals that are against Shariah or based on societal pressure, not sincerity.

Such actions are void of reward, and rooted in pride, hypocrisy, and show-off culture.

✅ Satan as a Lifelong and Afterlife Companion [150]

Evil companion” refers to:

  • A person who, through showing off, disbelief, and sin, becomes so close to Satan that:

    • Satan shares his food,

    • Satan influences his speech, actions, and desires,

    • And in the Hereafter, this person will be chained to Satan.

To protect oneself, a believer should begin every action with “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah),
which spiritually blocks Satan’s involvement in one’s deeds.
